February 2015 in Kensington / Washington DC Temple Mission

Hello friends and family...
just sayin'
A few of the things that make me happy - my jewelry and my Moonlight Path.  Although, as much as I like these things, they do not even come close to the joy I receive from serving in the temple. (and without either of those items on me)
Parker had asked his Grampa Cannon what bamboo looked like when they were together one time on a golf date.  This bamboo is at the edge of our apartment parking lot.  We will try to get a better picture now that it is warmer.

Our good friends, Wayne & Sue Slade, celebrated their "forever marriage" on February 20.  They had been married civilly 15 years earlier.
It was a grand party!
With lots of wonderful friends
Cynthia Jensen from Twin Falls, Idaho, and Joslin Bartholomuez from Singapore
Chall & Annette Cook from Huntington, Utah
David and Ann Moyle from Springville, Utah
John and Hella Lunnen from Federal Way, Washington
Gini Wiltbank from Salem, Oregon
Jerolyn Stringham from Provo, Utah
Sue Slade (the 'new' bride) from Mt. Pleasant, Utah and Mesa, Arizona
Cynthia and Dee Jensen from Kimberly, Idaho
They completed their mission and returned home in April - we miss them terribly!  Plan to stop and see them on our way home at the end of our mission.  They became very good friends to us in the short time we had together.
Pam and Evan Lewis trained with us in Salt Lake and will be here the same amount of time as we will be here.  We have a lot of fun times with them.  They are from Cedar City, Utah.

This is my very first name submitted (on my own - actually with help from my friend Gini) for temple ordinances - Minnie Cummins.  She and I worked together at Burns Bros. Travel Stops many years ago; and I eventually became her guardian, making sure her needs were met until she died.  She had 'nudged' me a couple of times to get her 'work' done - once in Portland several years ago and then again after we arrived here.  So I thought I had better do it!

Beautiful night sky behind the temple fountain

I don't know if I will ever tire of taking pictures of this beautiful edifice

Ward Field Trip to DC on the MARC
This train station is within walking distance of our apartment.  (So, yes, we hear trains ALOT!)
We visited the Library of Congress, the Capitol Building and the Supreme Court.

Looking out the window on our way to the big city
This is Silver Spring - on our way
This is my fun friend, Pam Lewis.  Anticipating a fun day.

Walking to the Library of Congress we passed the Cannon Building and thought it was appropriate for us to have our picture taken standing in front of it.
This telephone was in the Ladies' Room.  It made me laugh - $.50 to make a phone call!  I remember when my mother would insist that I carry a dime in my shoe so that I could call home if I needed to.

The Giant Bible of Mainz
We saw some amazing things in the Library of Congress.
This is a very large manuscript Bible produced in 1452-3, probably in Mainz, Germany, or nearby.  It is notable for its beauty, for being one of the last manuscript Bibles written before the invention of printing in the West.  The Bible's description records that the scribe began work on April 4, 1452 and finished on July 9, 1453.

Gutenberg Bible
This was the first substantial book printed in the West with movable metal type.  Before its printing in 1454 or 1455, books were either copied by hand or printed from engraved wooden blocks - processes that could take months or years to complete.  Johann Gutenberg invented a printing press that revolutionized the distribution of knowledge by making it possible to produce many copies of a work in a relatively short amount of time.
So there is a bit of a history for you.

The Thomas Jefferson Library
This was my favorite place that we visited.  I felt like I was on holy ground.  Our forefathers were such inspired men.  There has always been a 'plan' in place for mankind.
An inside view of the beautiful Library of Congress
The Capitol sits atop Capitol Hill at the eastern end of the National Mall.  It was completed in 1800.  At this point in time, it has scaffolding around it.
Happy Valentine's Day!

Thank you, Wayne & Family for adding some yummy warmth to this VERY cold day.
...and thank you to Henry and Eloise for the sweet notes.
Random!
This is a really cute bag that Heidi gave to me before we left Oregon.  It opens into a bag.  And since we are charged for our bags at the stores here, this little cutie comes in handy when we have just picked up a few items from Target, etc.
Voila'
a cute bag for carrying 'stuff'

And!  We just keep getting more and more and more snow!

But we just keep on going to the temple - and we love, love, love it! (not the snow - going to the temple)

Fun and beautiful pictures of where we 'work'

AND we keep having parties...
This one was a surprise birthday party at a nearby restaurant.

Joann and Michael Erickson (birthday boy) from Morgan, Utah

More friends - Rita and Jim Hollingshaus from South Jordan, Utah

Judy and Ed Fillmore from Aurora, Colorado

And our good friends (again) from Kimberly, Idaho

Wayne and Sue Slade (again) from Mesa, Arizona and Mt. Pleasant, Utah

Ken and Sue Ann Workman from Los Lumas, New Mexico

We are very busy here with friends wanting to go places together, get together at each other's apartments for dinner and games, ward activities and parties for birthdays and any other good (or not) ideas that someone has just to get together.  Michael is playing more games here than he has in years!  I'm loving it.  Him?  Maybe just a little?

We love you all, miss you and pray for you everyday.  We know that we are where the Lord wants us to be and doing the work that He has for us to do.  We are very happy!

Next Blog is for the month of March -- Spring is coming!?!

And then --- one more Blog for April and we will be caught up!  Yaay!
